Patio & Hardscape Styles We Build
Hardscaping is the stonework that turns a backyard into a room, and we build it as a full project, to a written scope, schedule, and price before the first paver is set. We build every common patio and hardscape style across Columbia and the Midlands:

Paver patios
Brick and concrete-paver patios in custom layouts, set on a compacted base that holds its line for decades.

Natural-stone patios & walkways
Flagstone and natural-stone entertaining areas and paths that tie the whole yard together.

Fire features & seating walls
Fire-pit areas, built-in seating walls, and borders that make a patio a place to gather.

Patio + outdoor-living combos
Built together with a retaining wall, outdoor kitchen, or deck as one coordinated build.
Not sure yet how the patio sits in the rest of the yard? Landscape design in Columbia SC puts the whole property on paper first, so the hardscape, planting, and drainage get sequenced instead of guessed at. Adding a roof over part of it? See screened porches in Columbia SC. Planning poured-concrete flatwork instead? See concrete contractors, or the full outdoor living contractor hub.
Why Build Your Patio With Chonko Construction
A patio is only as good as what's under it, and the base you never see is what keeps the surface flat, drained, and crack-free for years. We excavate, grade for drainage, and compact a proper aggregate base before a single paver goes down, then set the field, edges, and joints so it stays put through Midlands clay and weather.
Because we're a full home builder, we can fold the patio into a bigger outdoor build (a retaining wall, an outdoor kitchen, a deck or porch) and plan it as one project instead of three. The scope, schedule, and price are in writing before any work starts, so the number you sign is the number you pay.

Excavate to depth
Dig out the footprint deep enough that base and surface both fit under your finished grade.
2water_drop
Grade for drainage
Pitch it so storm water leaves the surface and moves away from the house, not toward it.
3layers
Compact the base
A proper aggregate base, compacted in lifts, before a single paver goes down.
4grid_on
Set field, edges, joints
Lay the pattern, lock the perimeter, fill the joints, so it stays put through clay and weather.
What Drives the Price
Cost guidearrow_forwardEvery yard is different, so we set the exact number in writing after we walk the property. A few things move it most:
- square_footSquare footage
- The single biggest factor: more patio means more material, base, and labor.
- texturePaver vs. stone
- Concrete pavers, clay brick, and natural flagstone each carry a different material cost.
- foundationBase prep & drainage
- Soft soil, poor drainage, or a slope all add excavation and base work before the surface goes in.
- border_stylePatterns & borders
- Herringbone fields, soldier-course borders, and inlays add cutting and labor.
- local_fire_departmentFire pits & seating walls
- Built-in features are their own line on top of the patio field.
- front_loaderOld-surface removal
- Tearing out and hauling off an existing patio or slab is its own line.

Built for the climate
Patios in the Midlands
South Carolina's clay soil and heavy summer storms are hard on a patio. Poor drainage and a skimped base are why so many crack, heave, or sink. We build for it: excavation to proper depth, a compacted aggregate base, and grading that moves water away from the house and off the surface. Set right, a paver or stone patio shrugs off our heat, humidity, and downpours, and because the surface is individual units, a settled section can be lifted and reset instead of jackhammered out like a cracked slab.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a paver patio and a concrete patio?add
A paver patio is built from individual units (brick, concrete, or stone) set on a compacted base, repairable and flexible. A concrete patio is a single poured slab, lower cost but prone to cracking. Chonko Construction builds both.
How long do paver patios last?add
A properly installed paver patio lasts decades. Individual pavers can be lifted and reset if a section settles, and the surface resists cracking better than poured concrete. Proper base prep is what determines longevity.
How much does a paver patio cost in Columbia, SC?add
Cost depends on square footage, paver type, and base prep. Every Chonko Construction project starts with a written scope, schedule, and price before work begins, so the number is clear up front. See our Midlands paver patio cost guide for real price ranges by size and material.
