Retaining Wall Types We Build
An engineered retaining wall does real structural work (holding back a grade, leveling a yard, and controlling erosion), so we build it to a written scope, schedule, and price before the first course is set. We build every common wall type across Columbia and the Midlands:

Segmental block (SRW)
Engineered modular block, the most common and cost-effective wall.

Natural stone & boulder walls
A landscape look that blends into the yard.

Poured concrete walls
For tall or fully structural applications.

Terraced walls
Multiple stepped walls that tame a steep slope and add planting beds.
A retaining wall is often one part of a complete outdoor transformation. Pair it with a paver patio, deck, or grading and site work. See the full outdoor living contractor hub.
Height sets the build
Why Build Your Wall With Chonko Construction
A retaining wall is only as good as what you can't see. The base, the backfill, and the drainage behind it are what keep it standing instead of bulging and failing a few seasons in. We excavate and compact a proper leveling base, build in gravel backfill and drain pipe, and reinforce taller walls with geo-grid so the wall holds its line for the long haul.
Because we're a full home builder, we can fold the wall into a bigger outdoor build (a paver patio, a regraded yard, or new outdoor living space) and plan it as one project instead of three. The scope, schedule, and price are in writing before any work starts, so the number you sign is the number you pay.
What it takes
- checkA deeper compacted base, sized to the load above
- checkGravel backfill and drain pipe to relieve water pressure
- checkGeo-grid reinforcement where the height calls for it
- removeEngineered design and permit, depending on the design

What Drives the Price
Every site is different, so we set the exact number in writing after we walk the grade. A few things move it most:
- Wall height
- Taller walls need a deeper base, reinforcement, and often an engineered design.
- Block, stone, or concrete
- Segmental block, natural stone, boulder, and poured concrete each price differently.
- Linear footage
- Total length scales material and labor.
- Drainage & backfill
- Gravel backfill and drain pipe are what keep a wall standing, and they're built into the wall.
- Site access & grading
- Slope, soil, and machine access all affect excavation time.
- Engineering & permits
- Walls over about four feet typically require an engineered design and a permit.
Pricing

Built for the climate
Retaining Walls in the Midlands
The Midlands' clay soil, sloped lots, and heavy summer downpours are exactly what a retaining wall is built to handle, and exactly what makes drainage non-negotiable. We build for it: a compacted base, gravel backfill and drain pipe to relieve water pressure, and geo-grid reinforcement where the height calls for it. Set right, the wall holds the grade and controls erosion through our wet-season storms instead of leaning, cracking, or washing out.

Frequently Asked Questions
What type of retaining wall is best?add
It depends on the height, soil, and look. Segmental retaining wall (SRW) block is the most common and cost-effective; natural stone and boulder walls suit a landscape look; poured concrete suits tall or structural walls. Chonko Construction recommends the right type for your grade and drainage.
How much does a retaining wall cost in Columbia, SC?add
Retaining wall cost depends on height, material, length, drainage, and access. Every Chonko Construction project starts with a written scope, schedule, and price before work begins, so the number is clear up front. See our Midlands retaining wall cost guide for real price ranges by material and height.
Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Columbia, SC?add
Retaining walls above a certain height (often around four feet) typically require a permit and engineered design. Chonko Construction handles the permitting and engineering as part of the project where required.
